MYRNA LEVIN

MYRNA HOLZBERG LEVIN

Myrna Holzberg Levin died peacefully on March 24, 2014. Born in Saskatoon, May 21, 1917, she grew up with her parents, Arthur and Elsie Rose, her almost-twin sister, Zoe, 14 months younger, and their little brother, Gerry. Arthur Rose Cleaners, her father's, and then her brother's business, provided for the family. She graduated from City Park Collegiate and from the University of Saskatchewan in 1937. Myrna married Harry William Levin on November 13, 1938 and moved to Winnipeg. They raised their family on McAdam Avenue and she spent the summers with her children at the family cottage in Gimli, a place that she loved. She was an active participant in community organizations, among them the Luxton Home and School Association, Hadassah, and the National Council of Jewish Women and was a founder of the Women's Endowment Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. Always stylish and fashionable, Myrna would appear at any event to which she was invited. She and Harry believed that it was important to celebrate the good things in life. They were deeply interested in cultural activities, going to the Winnipeg Symphony, theatre in Winnipeg and elsewhere, and to movies. The Sunday New York Times was ever present in the house, and the bookshelves overflowed. Well into her 90s she continued to see as many newly released movies as she could. Her daughter Esther Ruth, her husband Harry, her parents Elsie and Arthur Rose, and her brother Gerald Rose predeceased her. She will be missed by her daughter Julie, her husband Larry Dworkin, and her sons Daniel, married to Lilian Bonin, Michael, married to Ruth Mann, and Jonathan, her sister, Zoë, of Vancouver, and sister-in-law Gladys Rose of Toronto. Myrna and Zoe Gropper shared 95 years full of all the things life offered. She loved her siblings and their families, her in-laws, and found great joy in her 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. The funeral was at Congregation Etz Chayim, Winnipeg, Thursday, March 27, 2014 Shiva at 990 Dorchester Avenue, Winnipeg, Friday March 28, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, March 30, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Myrna Levin Women's Endowment Fund of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba or the United Way of Winnipeg.
